Viewpoint of Cristo Rei of Madeira (Garajau)

It was financed and commissioned by councillor Aires de Ornelas, son of the last entailed estate holder of Caniço. Historical and Artistic Information

Cristo Rei of Ponta do Garajau, or Cristo Rei of Madeira, is the monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus erected at Ponta do Garajau. The monument, standing 14 meters tall, consists of a statue with open arms facing the ocean, executed by French sculptors Pierre Lenoir and Georges Serraz. It is the oldest monument to Cristo Rei ever built.
