Fort São Fernando, in Santa Cruz, was built in the 18th century with the aim of observing and protecting the coast.
Located above the beach of Santa Cruz, Fort São Fernando served for observation and defense of the coast and was restored by Paulo Dias de Almeida on the occasion of the liberal struggles.
The denomination of São Fernando comes from an old chapel that existed there, which gave its name to the site and in 1820 no longer existed.
At that time there was next to the guard house a chapel, dedicated to São Lázaro.
