The Roman bridge, likely dating from the 1st century, was part of one of the military roads of the ancient "Conventus Bracaraugustanus", connecting Braga to Astorga. The medieval part of the bridge, associated with the city's fortifications, was completed in 1370 and remodeled in the reign of King Manuel I in 1504, adding decorative battlements.

The Roman Bridge has seven visible arches, while the medieval section has fifteen, two of which are buried. These structures, built in stone masonry, are a notable example of the engineering and aesthetics of the time. The Roman part of the bridge, partially hidden by the mass where the Church of Santo António da Torre Velha stands, and the medieval part stand out for their grandeur and beauty.
