Roman and Medieval Bridge of Ponte de Lima
The town of Ponte de Lima, one of the oldest in Portugal, is home to a two-faceted architectural wonder: the Roman and Medieval Bridge. This iconic structure is not only a symbol of the town but also a living testament to the history and culture of the region. Located in the heart of Ponte de Lima, the bridge is a vital landmark in the urban landscape, attracting visitors from all over the world.
Description and History
The Roman and Medieval Bridge is a complex made up of two distinct parts: a medieval segment, extending from the left bank of the river to the Church of Santo António da Torre Velha, and a remaining section of the Roman bridge. The Roman bridge, likely dating from the 1st century, was part of one of the military roads of the ancient "Conventus Bracaraugustanus", connecting Braga to Astorga. The medieval part of the bridge, associated with the city's fortifications, was completed in 1370 and remodeled in the reign of King Manuel I in 1504, adding decorative battlements.
Architectural Features
The Roman Bridge has seven visible arches, while the medieval section has fifteen, two of which are buried. These structures, built in stone masonry, are a notable example of the engineering and aesthetics of the time. The Roman part of the bridge, partially hidden by the mass where the Church of Santo António da Torre Velha stands, and the medieval part stand out for their grandeur and beauty.
