Dona Maria Pia Bridge
The D. Maria Pia Bridge is a remarkable railway infrastructure, inaugurated on November 4, 1877. This bridge, which carried the North Line over the Douro River, connected the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. It ceased operations on June 24, 1991, replaced by the São João Bridge, but remains an icon of Portuguese engineering and history.
Eiffel's Design and Technical Features
Designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel, the Dona Maria Pia Bridge is considered one of his greatest masterpieces, along with the Garabit Viaduct. At the time of its inauguration, it was the bridge with the largest iron arch in the world. The structure, with a total length of 352.875 m, stands out for its parabolic shape and impressive strength. The arch under the deck is 167 meters long and 48.60 meters high, resting on seven pillars, reflecting Eiffel's technical mastery.
Historical and Cultural Significance
Classified as a National Monument since 1982, the Dona Maria Pia Bridge was also recognized as an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Engineering (ASCE) in 1990. Its name honors Queen Maria Pia of Savoy, wife of King Luís I. Today, although inactive, the bridge is a symbol of Portuguese heritage and a magical place to visit, offering spectacular views of the Douro River and unique photographic opportunities.
