St. Gonçalo Bridge

The St. Gonçalo Bridge, a historical and architectural landmark in Amarante, is located over the Tâmega River, in the parish of the Union of Parishes of Amarante (São Gonçalo), Madalena, Cepelos, and Gatão. This example of civil architecture in Baroque and Neoclassical styles, classified as a National Monument since 1910, is accompanied by the Church and Convent of São Gonçalo, forming the city's "ex libris".

Origins and Reconstruction

The origin of the bridge dates back to an ancient Roman structure, part of the route to Guimarães and Braga. Local tradition attributes the construction or reconstruction of the medieval bridge to the blessed Gonçalo de Amarante around 1250. In 1763, a flood of the Tâmega River caused the bridge's collapse, leading to its reconstruction in 1782, under the direction of Carlos Amarante, with its inauguration in 1790.

A Symbol of Resistance and Faith

In the context of the Peninsular War, the St. Gonçalo Bridge was the stage of heroic defense against Napoleonic troops in 1809. Today, the bridge commemorates this resistance, with a plaque on one of its pyramids. The bridge still holds the image of Our Lady of the Bridge, initially on the cross, now in the church, symbolizing the protection of passersby.

Architectural Features

With about 50 meters in length, the bridge stands out for its three unequal arches, semi-circular balconies with stone benches, and Baroque ornamentation. The two pairs of pinnacles at each end and the adornments in the form of an electoral urn are distinctive elements of this structure.

Amarante: A City of History and Beauty

The city of Amarante, enriched by the presence of the St. Gonçalo Bridge, is a destination of history, nature, and gastronomy. Founded around the year 1200 and elevated to a city in 1985, Amarante offers picturesque scenes with historical buildings and churches along the Tâmega River. Its proximity to the Douro River Valley and Guimarães makes it an essential stop in Northern Portugal.

Exploring the Municipality of Amarante

The municipality of Amarante is a treasure in the north of Portugal, full of places to visit. In addition to the St. Gonçalo Bridge and the Church of the same name, the Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Museum stands out, a space dedicated to futurism and modernism, located in the church's cloisters. The city is known for its rich confectionery, with bakeries serving typical conventual sweets, such as the famous São Gonçalo tool. Amarante is also an ideal place for lovers of art, music, cinema, and poetry, offering various cultural activities and a perfect setting for photography enthusiasts.

For those interested in history and architecture, a visit to the Municipal Market, designed by Januário Godinho and soon to be rehabilitated by Souto de Moura, is essential. The city, bathed by the Tâmega River, also offers beautiful walks along the river, complemented by a variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants. For a complete gastronomic experience, a stop at local establishments to taste the traditional sausages, cheeses, and wines of the region is highly recommended. The natural beauty and rich history of Amarante invite a peaceful and enriching exploration, where every corner reveals a part of the identity and charm of this Portuguese municipality.
