Parish Church of São Martinho do Campo
The Parish Church of São Martinho do Campo, located at Av. Manuel Dias Machado 24, 4795-445 São Martinho, is a magnificent representation of religious architecture in Portugal. This temple, dedicated to Saint Martin, its patron, stands out for its neoclassical construction initiated at the beginning of the 20th century and its consecration carried out in 1910. The current church was built on the foundations of an earlier one, of which it still retains some elements.
Architecture and Sacred Art
Characterized by a neoclassical aesthetic, the interior of the Church of São Martinho do Campo is adorned with a set of unique Baroque imagery in the municipality of Valongo. The altars in gilded woodcarving and the venerable images are of particular importance due to their antiquity. The ceiling of the main chapel, decorated with storied coffering, illustrates the Mysteries of the Rosary and scenes from the life of Saint Martin. The walls of the main chapel are enriched with tile panels, and the body of the church displays walls and ceiling painted artistically. In the sacristy, there are 18th-century figurative tiles illustrating the life of Saint Jerome. The church's plan is rectangular and consists of a single nave, accompanied by an imposing bell tower.
Exterior and Surroundings
The facade of the church is covered with white tiles with figurative blue ornaments, depicting religious themes. The front structure is marked by six openings in perfect arches. The main portal, flanked by two small windows and topped by three large windows, gives visual harmony to the facade. In the pediment, a circular window stands out. Architecturally, the church finds inspiration in the main church of Valongo and, indirectly, in the church of Lapa in Porto. Nearby, one can find the cross, the parish house, the social and parish center, and the Quinta do Visconde, a historical property now belonging to the parish.
