Church of Jesus' Convent (Setúbal)

The Church of the Convent of Jesus, in Setúbal, is a monument of great importance to Portuguese architecture, built between 1490 and 1510. Located in the center of the city, this building consists of a rectangular nave and a higher polygonal apse, fluidly supported by staggered buttresses, with gargoyles and decorative pinnacles. The bell tower is located in the western part of the façade and the main portal, in the center of the south façade, has archivolts decorated with Franciscan motifs and allusions to convent life.
The portal, still unfinished, is adorned with references to Jesus and the name of the founder of the convent, its entrance being divided into two twin arches. The south apse is decorated with a grille window for which a late Gothic filigree was used, directed to the altar. The view of the monument from the square offers a magnificent panorama of the city.
