A fascinating church located within the castle grounds. It features architectural elements from various periods.
History of the Church
The Church of Santa Maria do Castelo or Parish Church of the Castle is located in Abrantes, in the former parish of São João, now the Union of the Parishes of Abrantes (São Vicente and São João) and Alferrarede). Situated within the Castle of Abrantes, it is presumed to have been ordered to be built by D. Afonso II in 1215. In 1429, it was destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt between 1433 and 1451 by order of the alcaide-mor of Abrantes, D. Diogo Fernandes de Almeida. On June 16, 1910, it was classified as a National Monument.
The D. Lopo de Almeida Museum
Deconsecrated in 1834, the church houses the D. Lopo de Almeida Museum, founded in 1931, which includes various museological collections, notably flamboyant Gothic and 16th-century funerary sculpture.
Architecture and Importance
Composed of a single nave, the body of the church is covered by a wooden ceiling. The funerary pantheon of the Almeida family, it houses the mortal remains of the church's refounder, D. Diogo Fernandes de Almeida, D. Lopo de Almeida, the first Count of Abrantes, as well as the tomb of the second Count of Abrantes, D. João de Almeida, D. António de Almeida, and the first Marquis of Abrantes, D. Rodrigo Anes de Almeida Meneses, a founding member of the Royal Portuguese Academy of History.
Recent Discoveries
In 2019, during restoration works of the Church, a surprise emerged: beneath a panel of tiles in the main chapel, several frescoes were found.
