Chapel of Senhor do Calvário: A Historical Treasure in Valongo
The Chapel of Senhor do Calvário, located on Avenida 5 de Outubro, in Valongo, Portugal, is a monument of significant historical and cultural importance. Originating from a promise made in 1813, the chapel was erected to prevent a third French invasion in the region. This promise was fulfilled by José Monteiro da Maia, reflecting the strong connection of the community with their faith and history.
Architecture and Sacred Art
With an architecture developed longitudinally and oriented to the south, the chapel has a unique rectangular plan, composed of a single nave. The gable roof, adorned with a cross at the vertex and pinnacles at the ends, complements its granite structure with white plaster panels. In 1871, it underwent significant restoration and expansion works, financed by the support of Valongo residents living in Brazil.
Internally, the chapel houses three 18th-century images, representing the Crucified Christ, Saint Roch, and Saint Francis, as well as an image of Our Lady of Fatima on the outside, in a small glass shrine. These pieces are testimonies of the region's rich religious and artistic heritage.
Renovation and Celebration
In 2013, the chapel underwent rehabilitation works, including the addition of a bell tower with a corten steel-clad metal structure, further enriching its historical and aesthetic value. This space is not just a place of worship, but also a landmark that connects the inhabitants of Valongo to their history and traditions.
The city of Valongo, situated in the hills 10 km from the center of Porto, offers a unique blend of residential serenity, natural beauty, and cultural richness. Besides the Chapel of Senhor do Calvário, the municipality of Valongo has several attractions worth exploring.
