Capela de Santo Isidoro - A Historical Relic in S. Cosme, Gondomar
The Capela de Santo Isidoro, built in the 18th century, is majestically located on top of Monte Crasto, an imposing natural elevation of 194 meters in height. This place offers a stunning panoramic view over Gondomar, Gaia, and Porto, being a natural viewpoint of rare beauty. In front of the chapel, there are notable side crucifixes dated from 1757 and a central one from 1759, enhancing its historical and architectural value.

Surrounded by lush woods, the Capela de Santo Isidoro is situated at the top of Monte Castro. This area, besides being a testament to human construction, is a haven of nature. A Hill with History

The origin of the name Gondomar dates back to Germanic influences, with historical records mentioning the hill, the fort, and Gondomar since the 10th century. The chapel was donated to the Brotherhood of Santo Isidoro in the 18th century, a gesture that underscores its historical and cultural importance in the region.
Architecture and Renovation
The chapel, of ancient foundation, was expanded and rebuilt in the first half of the 20th century, adopting Neo-Romanesque styles. With a rectangular floor plan, consisting of a nave, chancel, and bell tower, its interior is lit by biforas and wide openings. The main façade, with a trilobed frieze and staggered windows, and a golden carved altarpiece inside, stand out as notable artistic elements.
Gondomar: Land of History and Tradition
Gondomar, rich in stories and archaeological findings, is known as the "Capital of Goldsmithery" due to its long tradition in the art of goldworking. Filigree and Woodworking stand out, with Carving being an important art in religious ornamentation. The construction of typical Douro boats, the "valboeiros," is also part of the rich local cultural heritage.
Besides the Capela de Santo Isidoro, Gondomar offers Baroque churches, historical properties such as the Quinta de Villar d'Allen, and river beaches in the summer.
