Roman Temple of Évora

The Roman Temple of Évora, also incorrectly known as the Temple of Diana, is one of the most grandiose and well-preserved Roman structures in the Iberian Peninsula. Located in Largo Conde de Vila Flor, at the heart of the city of Évora, this monument was built in the 1st century AD in honor of Emperor Augustus, revered as a god.

History and Architecture

The Roman Temple of Évora is a classical example of Corinthian style. It was modified in the 2nd and 3rd centuries and unfortunately partially destroyed in the 5th century during barbarian invasions. However, its basic structure, including the granite podium and some of its Corinthian columns with marble capitals from Estremoz, remains intact.

The temple underwent various transformations throughout the centuries, serving as a fortified house in the 14th century and a bullring before being restored in the 19th century to recover its original layout. Excavations from the 20th century unearthed vestiges of a portico and a reflection pool that surrounded the temple.

The Temple Today

Currently, the Roman Temple of Évora is an icon of the city and a significant historical landmark. Visiting this monument is like traveling back in time and witnessing the grandeur of Roman presence in Portugal. Tourists can appreciate the view of almost complete podium, the ruined staircase, and the columns that still support the original architrave.

A walk through Diana's Garden, adjacent to the temple, offers an ideal spot for relaxation and enjoying the panoramic view over the city and the Alentejo plain. The surrounding area is filled with cafes and shops, providing a culturally and gastronomically complete experience.

Guided Tours and Events

For those wanting to deepen their knowledge about the Roman Temple of Évora, guided tours are recommended. Local guides offer detailed tours that enhance visitors' experiences. On weekends, it is common to see newlywed couples having their photos taken against this historic backdrop.

World Heritage Site

The historical center of Évora, where the temple is located, was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. This designation reflects the cultural and historical importance of the city, which preserves remains of various civilizations that passed through it.

The Municipality of Évora

Beyond the Roman Temple, the municipality of Évora offers a wide range of tourist attractions. The Imposing Cathedral of Évora is an example of Portuguese Gothic architecture and offers spectacular views of the city from its roof. The Chapel of Bones, located in São Francisco Church, is another unmissable attraction, known for its walls covered with human bones.

The Silver Water Aqueduct, built in the 16th century, is a notable engineering feat that still supplies the city. The streets of Évora are filled with historic buildings, museums, and enchanting squares that invite detailed exploration. Don't miss out on the opportunity to savor the delicious Alentejo cuisine at one of the many traditional restaurants in the city.
