Medieval Bridge of Mirandela

The Medieval Bridge of Mirandela, also known as the Old Bridge or Bridge over the Tua River, is a Romanesque-style structure that stands out in the landscape of the city of Mirandela, Portugal. This bridge, classified as a National Monument since 1910, is one of the city's landmarks and one of the three bridges that cross the Tua River.

Origins and History

It is assumed that the city of Mirandela, formerly called Caladunum, had a Roman or medieval bridge, evidenced by mason's marks on the original arches. The construction date of the Medieval Bridge of Mirandela is not precisely known, but it is believed to have been built at the end of the 15th century or the beginning of the 16th century. It has a history marked by several reconstructions, especially after the devastating floods of 1909.

Architectural Features

Originally about 270 meters in length, the bridge has been modified over the years, especially after the floods of 1909 that led to the collapse of four of its arches. Today, measuring 238.5 meters in length and featuring 17 arches, four of which are broken, the bridge presents a flat, slabbed deck, now asphalted, and is exclusively for pedestrian use. Its structure in granite masonry and architectural details, such as the niches that were once present and the iron railing, give it a unique beauty.

Cultural and Touristic Importance

The Medieval Bridge of Mirandela is not just a work of historical engineering, but also a cultural and tourist meeting point. It is the ideal place for walks, offering picturesque views of the Tua River and the surrounding landscape. Additionally, the bridge serves as a beautiful backdrop for photographs and is one of the symbols of the city of Mirandela.
