The Luís I Bridge: A Masterpiece of Engineering in the Heart of Porto
The D. Luís I Bridge, also known as the Luiz I Bridge, is a magnificent metal structure, characteristic of the urban landscape of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. This iconic work, which stretches over the Douro River, was built between 1881 and 1886, replacing the previous suspension bridge. The project was led by the Belgian engineer Théophile Seyrig, who collaborated with Gustave Eiffel on the D. Maria Pia Bridge. The bridge, inaugurated in 1886 (upper deck) and 1888 (lower deck), is a testament to 19th-century engineering and has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1982 and as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
Origin of the Name and Curiosities
Contrary to popular belief, the absence of King D. Luís I at the bridge's inauguration and the subsequent removal of the title "Dom" from its name is a myth. Since its construction, the bridge was referred to as the "Ponte Luiz I" in newspapers of the time. Other contemporary constructions also omitted royal titles in their names, such as the Maria Pia railway bridge. However, the people of Porto have always called the structure the "Ponte de D. Luís", maintaining the royal title.
A Landmark in the City's History and Development
In the second half of the 19th century, Porto was experiencing a period of economic growth, with traffic between Gaia and Porto constantly increasing. The need for a new bridge led to a public competition in 1879, resulting in the selection of the Société de Willebroeck's project. Construction began in 1881 and the bridge was inaugurated in 1886, becoming one of the most recognized symbols of Porto.
The Bridge in the 21st Century
Since 2005, the upper deck of the Luís I Bridge serves the Porto Metro's Line D, while the lower deck is used by pedestrians and vehicles. Various maintenance and rehabilitation projects have been carried out over the years, including the recent renovation of the lower deck, completed in 2023, which restricted traffic to public transport, bicycles, and pedestrians.
A Unique Experience
Beyond its historical and architectural importance, the D. Luís I Bridge offers stunning views over the Douro and the cities of Porto and Gaia. Whether walking on the upper or lower deck, visitors can appreciate the beauty of the Douro River, the liveliness of the Ribeira, and the serenity of Vila Nova de Gaia. A walk across the bridge, especially at dusk, is an unforgettable experience.
