Rodas Bridge: A Historical Legacy in Amares

The Rodas Bridge, located over the Homem River, is a bridge of significant historical and architectural importance. Situated on Av. Rio Homem in Caldelas, it connects the parish of Caldelas, Sequeiros, and Paranhos, from the municipality of Amares, to the parish of Ponte (São Vicente), from the municipality of Vila Verde, in the district of Braga, Portugal.

Classification and History

This national monument, classified since 1910, is a notable example of medieval public civil architecture. It was built during the Middle Ages, integrating the road that connected Braga to Ponte da Barca. Its historical relevance is unquestionable, serving as an important link between the municipalities of Amares and Vila Verde.

Architectural Features

The Rodas Bridge stands out for its robust granite structure, with a deck 34 meters long and 2.63 meters wide. This deck is supported by three full arches, with the central one being the largest, with an opening of 13.14 meters and a height of 13.80 meters. The buttresses and breakwaters, with a triangular section upstream and rectangular downstream, reinforce its structure, demonstrating medieval engineering and design.

Culture and Art

It is interesting to note the presence of 'alminhas', a popular art expression, at one of the bridge's entrances. These representations add a touch of culture and tradition to the site, connecting the past with the present.
