Ponte de Prado: A Historical and Cultural Connection

The Ponte de Prado, located over the majestic Cávado River, connects the parishes of Merelim (São Paio), Panoias, Parada de Tibães in Braga, and Vila de Prado in Vila Verde. This monument, classified as a National one since 1910, is a testimony to the rich Portuguese history, dating back to the time of Roman occupation. Its importance is not just historical, but also cultural, as evidenced by the legends and traditions surrounding it.

A Roman and Medieval Heritage

The discovery of a milestone from the time of Augustus suggests that the original construction of the Ponte de Prado dates back to the Roman era. Its purpose was to connect Bracara Augusta with the Northwestern Iberian Peninsula. During the medieval period, the bridge maintained its relevance as a connecting route, particularly between Braga and Ponte de Lima. In this era, it underwent its first major reconstruction, driven by the Archbishop of Braga, D. Paio Mendes, between 1118 and 1128.

Legends and Reconstructions

The floods of the Cávado, especially notable in 1510, led to the destruction and subsequent reconstruction of the bridge. The current version, dated 1616, is due to the architect António de Castro, who eliminated traces of the previous medieval structure. The bridge, with its seventeenth-century style and granite construction, has nine arches that display a harmonious combination of ogival and round shapes.

Traditions and Architectural Beauty

Beyond its historical value, the Ponte de Prado is the stage for a unique tradition: the celebration of "Egg on the Bridge". On Easter night, the bridge comes alive with the tradition of eating boiled eggs, a practice rooted in the popular belief that it will prevent headaches during the year. This tradition, although recent, illustrates the bridge's connection to the everyday life of the local communities.

Visually, the bridge impresses with its robustness and architectural details, such as the viewpoint adorned with the Coat of Arms of the Counts of Prado. This historical corner offers a privileged view of the Cávado River and the surrounding landscapes, being an invitation to reflection and appreciation of nature.

Exploring the Municipality of Vila Verde

Beyond the Ponte de Prado, the municipality of Vila Verde is a treasure trove of discoveries. The region is famous for its traditions, gastronomy, and natural landscapes. A visit to the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Alívio offers a unique spiritual and cultural experience, while the Peneda-Gerês National Park, a short distance away, is a paradise for nature lovers and trekking enthusiasts. The local cuisine, with highlights like lamprey and vinho verde, is an invitation to the palate, providing a true journey through traditional Portuguese flavors.

Finally, the fairs and markets of Vila Verde, especially during seasonal festivals, are an excellent opportunity to immerse oneself in the local culture. Here, one can experience the rich tapestry of customs, crafts, and music that define this vibrant region of Portugal.
