Jeronimos Monastery

The Jeronimos Monastery, also known as the Royal Jeronimos Monastery of Saint Mary of Belém, is a Portuguese architectural masterpiece located at Praça do Império, 1400-206 Lisbon, Portugal. This iconic monument was commissioned by King D. Manuel I towards the end of the 15th century and is closely linked to the Portuguese Discoveries.

History and Construction

The Jeronimos Monastery was built under the order of D. Manuel I, whose reign lasted between 1495 and 1521. Its construction began in the early 16th century and continued for approximately a hundred years. This grandiose project attracted the talent of various European architects and sculptors, including Diogo de Boitac, João de Castilho, and Nicolau Chanterene.

The monastery was intended for the Jeronimos Order, which occupied it until its secularization in the 19th century. Classified as a National Monument since 1907, the Jeronimos Monastery was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1983 along with the Tower of Belém, another major construction from D. Manuel I's reign.

Architecture and Highlights

The Jeronimos Monastery is a sublime example of Manueline architecture, characterized by its decorative richness and nautical symbolism. The southern portal of the church, by João de Castilho, is profusely adorned with figures of Portugal's Patron Saint, Archangel St. Michael, and of Our Lady of Belém. The western portal, designed by Nicolau Chanterene, displays portraits of D. Manuel I and Queen Maria of Aragon.

Apart from the magnificent church, the monastic complex includes the quintessential 16th-century cloister, the old refectory for monks, and the old library room. These spaces preserve the grandeur and beauty of the Jeronimos Monastery, making it one of Europe's most important monastic complexes.

Visits and Tips

The Jeronimos Monastery is one of Portugal's most visited tourist attractions. In 2022, it recorded 870,321 entries. Visiting the monastery includes access to the church and the cloister, and it is recommended to purchase tickets online to avoid long lines. The cloister, in particular, is a space for contemplation where one can appreciate the beauty of the arches and interior gardens.

For a more tranquil experience, it is suggested to visit during lunchtime between 13:00 and 14:00 hours or later around 16:00 hours. The Maritime Museum, located nearby, is another attraction that can complement the visit to the Jeronimos Monastery.

Exploring Lisbon Council

Lisbon, Portugal's capital city, is filled with history, culture, and natural beauty. Apart from the Jeronimos Monastery, the city offers a wealth of unmissable tourist attractions. The Tower of Belém, also inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List, is a 16th-century fortress that provides panoramic views over the Tejo River.

The Castle of São Jorge, situated atop a hill, offers stunning views over Lisbon and the Tejo River. The historic Alfama district, the city's oldest neighborhood, delights with its narrow streets and colorful houses. Praça do Comércio, one of Europe's largest squares, is another point of interest, featuring an impressive arch and views over the Tejo River.

For those who appreciate art, the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the National Azulejo Museum are must-visit destinations.
