The Fort of Sao Mamede was built in the 19th century on the site of the former hermitage of São Mamede, as part of the Peninsular Wars.
The fortins of Elvas occupy the top of a hillock that, taken by the enemy, threatened the Fort of Santa Luzia or the city, or else allowed the use of the Aqueduto da Amoreira as an obstacle to progress on the ground.
The Fortins of São Pedro, São Mamede and São Domingos are a Luso-British construction.
It was with the arrival of Wellington as generalissimo of the Anglo-Luso-Spanish allied armies in the Iberian Peninsula that from 1811 these small fortifications began to be built to protect the city.
