Built at the end of the 16th century to reinforce the defense of the Mondego River mouth, the Santa Catarina Fort (Figueira da Foz) was part of the defensive system of the port and bay of Figueira da Foz and Buarcos, together with the Buarcos Fortress and the Palheiros Fortim. With a triangular design, it features three curtains, one half-bastion and two irregular bastions. The entrance leads to an inner courtyard where there is a small chapel with a centralized plant and ribbed dome, dedicated to Santa Catarina de Ribamar, whose construction is credited to the architect Mateus Rodrigues. The Fort, with its lighthouse, remains as a historical reference and emblematic element of the city.
