The occupation of the place of Vimioso dates back to prehistory, being important in the defensive context of northeast Transmontana. The castle had a keep integrated in an oval wall with three circular towers and some cubelos. The entire complex was dotted with a moat and punctuated with machicolations. The entrance portal would be an arch. The Keep Tower was crowned with merlons and had a four-water roof. During the Restoration Wars, this defensive structure also had a predominant role and in the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) the castle was almost razed by an army of 40,000 Spaniards who invaded Portugal on May 5, 1762. Its population was taken into exile to Pamplona. In the 19th century, in the place of the castle, a school was built and, currently, only some plans of walls and the square base of the tower are perceptible.
