Discovering the Caste Hill Swing: A Panoramic Oasis in Vimeiro

Amid the mountains and lush vegetation of Vimeiro, you'll find the Caste Hill Swing, a simple yet enchanting tourist spot that offers a panoramic view of the surrounding nature. With a backdrop filled with mountains and valleys, this swing has the power to make us feel part of something bigger, a living canvas of Portugal's natural beauty.

The History and Culture of Vimeiro

Vimeiro is a parish in the municipality of Alcobaça and has a rich history that dates back to the times of the Christian Reconquest. The name 'Vimeiro' comes from 'wicker,' an abundant plant in the region, suggesting that this area was once a wild and uninhabited land. Moreover, Vimeiro was initially a vast estate of the Cistercian Monastery, known in the 13th century as 'Granja do Vimeiro,' pointing to its agricultural and cultural importance.

The Spirituality of the Place

If you're the type who likes to mix tourism with a touch of spirituality, Vimeiro does not disappoint. The first Main Church of the parish was built even before the formation of the community. The original small chapel, now non-existent, was dedicated to the Holy Spirit and was located near the current main church.

National Forest of Vimeiro: A Natural Heritage

Near the Caste Hill Swing, the National Forest of Vimeiro is another treasure of the region. With 262 hectares of forest, predominantly of maritime pine, the forest offers a revitalizing experience, ideal for hiking, picnics, and observing the local flora and fauna.

Personalities and Culture

We couldn't finish without mentioning João Rebelo da Silva, the author of 'The Metric Stick,' who was born in the village of Sortão in Vimeiro. The work is a rarity in Portuguese literature and was written in the years when Silva attended the University of Coimbra.

What else to visit in the municipality of Lourinhã

The municipality of Lourinhã has much more to offer besides the Caste Hill Swing and the National Forest of Vimeiro. If you are an enthusiast of natural history, don't miss the Lourinhã Museum, which houses an impressive collection of fossils and paleontological artifacts. The region is also famous for its plum liqueur, a local tradition that you should definitely try.

For beach lovers, the golden sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters of the region, such as Areia Branca Beach and Paimogo Beach, are a must-see. These beaches are great for relaxing, sunbathing, and, for the more adventurous, surfing and other water sports. The municipality is, without a doubt, a complete destination for all tastes and ages.
